How You Can Help the Butaan Project
ImageWe desperately need your help. Although the other endangered monitor lizard (the famous Komodo dragon) has received vast amounts of funding to aid its conservation, the butaan has been almost entirely neglected. Just $10 will make a difference! Please consider helping us. We will acknowledge your support here and in subsequent publications and keep you informed of all developments. In 2006 we plan to:
  • Continue monitoring and conservation efforts for Polillo populations of butaan.
  • Train 30 fieldworkers in the non-destructive techniques we have developed.
  • Continue investigations into the distributoion and ecology of a new form of giant fruit-eating lizard.
  • Investigate unknown giant fruit-eating lizards on other islands in the Philippines.

Some examples of how we spend money:
  • $10 will feed the entire team for a day
  • $20 will keep a camera trap running for a month
  • $40 will pay a project member's wage for a week
  • $80 will provide batteries for two months field work
  • $160 will allow us to radio-track a butaan for up to six months
  • $320 will allow us to train a Filipino biologist in non-destructive methods for surveying fruit-eating monitor lizards
  • $620 will provide camera-trap units allowing us to continually monitor activity at important resources
  • $2000 will pay for a comprehensive and urgently needed survey of the distibution of these animals in other parts of the Philippines
